The medieval walled area of Rome associated with the Popes, including the Vatican and Castel St. Angelo, were developed in the sixteenth century by successive Popes to be more than church and fortr...ess. Great urban schemes were made to assisst pilgrims in visiting the new St.Peters and other churches during the increasingly important jubilee years. Such schemes included raising obelisks, fountains, the renewal of the water supply and Christianising antique remains.
