Description
In this programme Ivan gaskell argues that it is misleading to treat Bruegel's depiction of peasants as simply realistic or as works of popular culture. They are complex works by an educated townsm...an and are related to humanist ideas about rural life, derived from classical writers. They also stand in a tradition of rural paintings derived from medieval books of hours, and they comment upon he social fabric of town and country in 16th century Flanders.
