After his defeat at Pavia, Francis I employed Gilles Le Breton to convert his favourite hunting lodge at Fontainebleau into a sumptuous Royal Palace, inviting to France such Italian artists as Ross...o Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio to decorate it. The influence of their Italian mannerist style became a watershed in the cultural development of Northern Europe, particularly the stucco reliefs and mural paintings in the Gallerie Francois II, the rooms of Madame d'Etampes and the ballroom built later by Henry II. Tim Benton analyses the complex decorative imagery and relates the evolution of the palace architecture to the changes in court life under succesive monarchs.
