Description
This programme examines some of the issues raised when a composer sets words to music. It introduces the basic problem of how does a a composer balance the words, which need to be heard and underst...ood, with the music, which needs to make sense on its own terms. Using four extracts from Henry Purcell's English opera 'Dido and Aeneas' the programme aims to introduce the main musical language devised by the composers in the genre of opera.
