Description
In this programme Donald Burrows explains how different musical scales require different sharps and flats to work and how the normal keyboard is designed to accomodate this, starting with the major... scale beginning on C. With a performance of Schubert's song 'Du Bist die Ruh' and the use of various different musical instruments he also shows how there is a technical need to compose music that sets the key at a pitch to fit particular voices and instruments. Apart from these technical explanations the programme demonstrates the colour and variety of expression that modulation or change of key introduces to musical composition.
