Description
This programme aims to examine the relationship between the rigours of theoretical training and the 'inspirational' image of the 'great' composers. Using surviving harmony exercises used by Beetho...ven and Handel, and set by Mozart for Thomas Attwood, the programme analyses the relevance of this technical training to 'real' music. Composers have traditionally been portrayed as rejecting 'theory' but these original manuscripts help to show that these composers regarded training as important. The manuscripts reveal the nature of the different training methods employed or experienced by them.
