Description
Structured around three interviews the programme demonstrates the importance of notation in the history, performance and composition of music in the Western European tradition. The origins and deve...lopment of western notation are traced over a thousand years to the point where it became recognizable as the system we use today. Although musical notation provides agreat deal of information about pitch, duration etc how useful is it in practice? Roy Goodman explains where some of the limitations of notation lie, with special reference to his preparation of a performance of Corelli's Concerto in D major op.6 no.4. Judith Weir discusses significant developments in notation since Corelli's day, making specific reference to the various stages of her composition of 'I broke a golden branch'.
