Description
In his investigation of Giotto's great fresco decoration Professor Charles Harrison starts by examining the nature of the commission by the wealthy Paduan patron, Enrico Scrovegni, discovering in t...he Last Judgement the theme of usury for which his father was accused. The private and public function of the chapel is further explored in terms of the type of decoration commissioned and at what stage Giotto contributed to the design. After a careful survey of the whole narrative cycle following each episode in the Life of the Virgin and The Life of Christ, Professor Harrison examines how Giotto designed the cycle within the architectural setting and how he handled the technical problems of narrative painting. Finally he examines Giotto's contribution to painting through a realism and human experience portrayed with an expressiveness never before achieved and with a level of critical humanism still apparent today.
