Description
This programme looks at six royal palaces built in the 17th century in France, England and Scotland, and considers the symbolic purposes for which they were built: as expressions of authority and p...ower, and to strengthen the realm. The palaces are examined in the order in which they were built: The Luxembourg (built for Marie de Medici), the banqueting house at Whitehall (built for James I, with ceiling commissioned by Charles I), the Louvre (extended by Louis XIII and Louis XIV), Holyrood Palace (rebuilt by Charles II), Versailles (built by Louis XIV), and ampton Court (extended by Wren for William and Mary).
