Description
few cities reflected the momentous changes which took place in 19th century Europe more intensely than Berlin. These were not only physical changes - of urbanisation, industrialisation and so forth... - but also changes in how people regard themselves. was a sense of identity defined by factors such a sculture, citizenship, common obligations to the state and empire? This programme explores these questions of identity through the history of a city which perhaps more than any other was the modern European city of the 19th century.
