This programme, presented by Gill Perry (OU), with contributions by Dr. Devangana Desai, an Indian art historian, contrasts the representations of women in Indian and 19th century French sculpture.... Images from the temples at Khajuraho with Rude's La Marseillaise on the Arc de Triomphe. La Marseillaise symbolises the victorious Republic of France whereas the sculptures of Khajuraho convey religious meaning. Both are now important public sculptures with tourist appeal, but to what extent are these images visible? Tourists look at the Arc de Triomphe, but do they see the sculpture in terms of its symbolic meaning - and how do tourists 'read' Khajuraho?
