Description
Part 1: Los Angeles: City of the Automobile discusses how cars have exerted a powerful effect on the structure of cities and the character of urban life. They allowed the population to spread out o...ver a wide area and to live at low densities. LA was the first city to experience the problems of urban sprawl and pollution - and in an extreme form. How is this dealt with and how do new technologies play their part? Part 2: Connecting Cities: Telecommunications and the Built Environment: Telecommunications can extend the workplace but nobody really knows what larger changes to cities might follow in the wake of these new technologies. The history of the telegraph and telephone shows that they supported, but did not cause, the decentralisation of industry, the concentration of financial services and the spread of the suburbs.
