Description
Poker is Western culture's all-purpose metaphor for the situation in which individuals, groups or nations come into highly-focussed, highly consequential conflict. Conflict in which it is evident... that "character", mental ability and physical resources will all help determine the outcome - "game" situations (Unit 2) of high risk. The Kennedy-Kruschev confrontation over Cuba in 1963 is perhaps the most famous recent example. What is the reality behind risk's great metaphor? Most of us are familiar with the myths and atmospherics of the poker game, be it the head to head professional confrontation of Steve McQueen and Lancey Howard in The Cincinatti Kid or the "friendly" weekly school in The Odd Couple. What actually goes on in a game is less well known and so we thought we should simply bring you, as accurately as possible, an actual game of poker. Seven Card Stud is one of the many variants of Poker and an increasingly popular version of this - "Hold 'Em" was the game played for the programme. We invited five people to play before our cameras each putting up £100 of their own money. One was Steve Fishpool, who had won the inaugural British Poker Championships less than 24 hours earlier. He was joined by four players who regularly participate in the Poker sessions run in a Midlands Casino: Roger Hart, Louise Hart, Verma and Mike Toon.

Footage description: This programme follows a session of 7 card stud poker. Using split screen techniques it shows the various hands that the players hold. It opens with the start of the session as the dealer introduces the players. One of the players Steve Fishpool is shown winning the British Poker Championship in Birmingham. Over the first game Jack Dowie describes the rules and procedures of the game. 40 games into the session Jack describes the problems Fishpool faces. He then gives a detailed description of the play of one hand. Twelve games later, Louise drops out and the men play on. In the first game Steve Fishpool is also knocked out and later Roger Hart. The final two players now don headsets and describe their impressions of the play and the games' progress. Mike Toone beats K Verma in the final game.
