This is the first of two films looking at the work of Dr. Michael Rose of the University of Bath. His study is concerned to explore with active trades unionists their attitudes towards multination...al companies, and what, if anything, they feel trades unionists can do internationally to respond to the fact of the multinationals' existence. In Programme 1 he talks to three French and two English trades unionists, on a variety of levels in the unions' hierarchies. There is an important cross-cultural element to his study and the film, shot in France and England, covers this. The French language is subtitled in English.

| Footage description: | Over shots of Renault car workers leaving the factory the commentator describes the aims of Michael Rose's study of international Trade Union cooperation. Shots of Rose interviewing several workers, from Renault, Ford, British Rail and SNCF. Over shots of French railway trains the commentator describes some of the methodological techniques used by Rose. There follows a series of interviews with trade union activists. Jean Le Monnier talks about the position of the French railways within a capitalist economy. Danny Connor talks about the position of convenor on the factory floor at Fords. He has to act as a bridge between official unions and the shop-floor workers. Patrick Clonard talks about his election by Renault workers and his involvement with the CFDT. Patrice Guersert talks about how his union position has affected his career at work. Len Mills, British Rail, describes his history as a union activist since 1950. In the next section of the programme Rose asks about the Unionists' attitudes towards multinational companies and the problems which threaten international trade union cooperation. He uses a range of structured answers in this section which will allow him to codify replies at a later date. |
