Description
Focusing on the Republic of Tanzania, this programme examines whether international trade affects the level of inequalities between nations, and the extent to which less developed countries are abl...e to control the pace and direction of their own development. The main concerns of programme are introduced in the opening section. Reference is made to the Theory of Comparative Advantage and the Theory of Unequal Exchange which are used as a common link between the sections. A 10-minute film sequence indicates what the social conditions are like in Tanzania today. A descriptive sequence outlines Tanzania's export and import statistics and also contains filmed interviews with His Excellency the High Commissioner for Tanzania and Dr. Reginald Green, Professorial Fellow at IDS, Sussex University. There follows a discussion between Diane Elson of the Dept. of Overseas Administration, Manchester University and Prof. Alasdair MacBean of Lancaster University on the relative merits and practical consequences of the two types of economic theory referred to above. A concluding section asks questions about Tanzania's future.
