Description
This programme is the last in a series of eight and, like all the others, is divided into three case studies filmed on location in the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia, Cracow, Poland and Birm...ingham, U.K. The central theme is the various ways in which the state may intervene in influencing urban development. In Birmingham we look at the issue of public housing which has been a political shuttlecock between the alternating Conservative and Labour administrations and which finds its contemporary expression in the debate over the selling off of council housing. In Vancouver we examine city involvement firstly in public housing and then in public transport and in facilitating large-scale private development. In Cracow, the new policy of providing private motor cars is examined as a departure from the normal socialist belief in public transport and also as a mechanism for gaining increased personal investment in Poland's consumer industries. The programme concludes with speculation as to what effect the growth in private transport may have on the socialist structure of the city.
