Description
This is a discussion on medical ethics led by Raanan Gillon, a practising GP who also edits the Journal of Medical Ethics. The participants are Diana Brahams (barrister-at-law and editor of the Med...ic-legal Journal), Michael Drummond (a health economist), Jack Dowie and Beverley Hunt. Raanan Gillon introduces the discussion by outlining the deontological and consequentialist theories of ethics and four principles that can govern medical practice (respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice). He suggests that a "sense of proportion" is needed when trying to combine these principles in practice. The discussion covers inter alia: the use of numbers in exercising a "sense of proportion"; the role of the patient in exercising autonomy; "circumstances"; the ethics of resource allocation problems; the practicality of ethical reflection in the real world.
