This programme for the Course "Social Problems and Social Welfare: explores the Asian family in Britain by focussing on an area in the East End of London. We start the programme by showing sc...enes from the Spitalfields Mela - a Bengali word for Festival. One family attending the Mela is the Hussein Family - we look at aspects of their life and examine two things; one, whether they have adopted to the British culture and, two, what elements of their traditional culture they have preserved. The programme continues by looking at the work of the Montefiore Centre and specifically at a group of women who have lived here a short while. They talk about what family life was like in Bangladesh and about how different it is here for them. We then go on to explore what young people feel about their culture and family. This part is introduced by Rita Wolf, an Asian actress who is leading a special Drama Class in Spitalfields School. She improvises scenes with the pupils about a young Asian girl who wants to marry "a white bloke". They improvise the family's reactions. This scene leads us into a discussion with young people who have formed "Joi Bangla" - their aim is to draw on their life in two cultures - British and Asian. They do this through music and dance - we observe the group at rehearsal which is intercut with their interviews. The programme concludes by looking at the future - we show the youngest daughter of the Hussein Family at primary school. This school runs a special project which builds on their pupils' culture - they organise photographic sessions where pupils have taken photographs of their family and they then discuss their family background and culture.
