Description
This programme is the fifth in a series of eight, and, like all the others, is divided into three case studies filmed on location in the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia; Cracow, Poland and Bi...rmingham, UK. The theme of this programme is housing. In Cracow it looks at the problems of providing accommodation for the huge expansion in the urban population consequent on post war socialist plans. In Vancouver, it examines the influence the pricing structure of the housing market may have on social segregation and on the character of communities. In Birmingham we look at the Small Heath district and examine its social change in the light of a decline in quality of an aged housing stock, the 'white flight' of some residents to more suburban housing and the problems faced by the incoming Asian community in providing themselves with an adequate urban environment. This programme has been re-made to include an updating postscript. Allan Cochrane, acting Course Team Chairman, explains the significance of recent events in Poland.
