Footage description: The first of three research studies is being done by Glyn Collis, research fellow at the Department of Psychology at Strathclyde University. Swann interviews Collis who explains that his research is concerned with patterns of speech that occur between mothers and young children, particularly those occasions when both vocalise at the same time. Shots of a mother and her 1 year old child talking and playing in Collis laboratory, where they are filmed. In interview Collis describes his research in more detail. Film of Collis and his assistant making a transcript of a video recording of a 'conversation' between mother and child. Shots of another mother and child (a 2 year old) playing together. In interview Collis describes his research method mentioning both problems and successes. He also gives his view of research in general. Shots of him using a computer terminal. The second research project is headed by Dr Peter Smith, a developmental psychologist at Sheffield University. In interview he explains that he is studying the effects of different styles of play-tutoring on the linguistic, cognitive, social and play skills of groups of pre-school children. Shots of a nursery school teacher encouraging a group of children in an episode of fantasy play. Smith briefly explains 'skills tutoring', then shots of a teacher playing a card game which involves counting with a group of children. The research is comparing the effects of these two kinds of tutoring. In interview Smith describes his research method, particularly how groups being tutored are observed, shots of observers recording comments as they observe a group. In interview Guy Herzmark, researcher on the project, describes the method of recording class conversations. Finally, Smith comments on some of the results he has obtained and on his style of research. The third and final example of current research is being directed by Norman Freeman, of the University of Bristol's department of Psychology. In interview he explains that his research is trying to discover if very young children can understand the concept of containment, such as objects placed inside cups, shots of research worker Sharon Lloyd testing an 11 month old by hiding keys inside cups. Freeman comments on the test. Interview with Chris Sinha, the project's principal investigator. He describes how primary concepts develop in young children. Swann interviews Sharon Lloyd, who describes how she performs the tests with small children. Film of her at work with an 11 month old, over which she gives further details of the methods used. Film of her testing a 16 month old child. She then describes a number of problems she has encountered in carrying out the research. Shots of a 9 month old being rather uncooperative. Finally Freeman outlines the results of their research.
