Footage description: The programme opens with stills of pre-war working class life in Leeds, over which Hoggart briefly describes in what ways working class life differs from that of other classes. Stills of Hoggart in his office, over which Barnes very briefly outlines Hoggart's career. From his home area in Leeds Hoggart describes his working class background and the influence that enabled him to escape that background via educational success. Some stills of pre-war life in Leeds are shown. Shots of Hoggart's primary school and of the public library he used as a child. He explains how both influenced him. From outside Colburn High School in Leeds, Hoggart describes the influence teachers at the school had upon him. He explains how he acquired an understanding of the class differences in British life. Over shots of pre-war Leeds Barnes mentions Hoggart's University career. From outside his University Hoggart describes his career there. He describes the influence upon him of his professor of English and explains the importance of his marriage. Stills of Hoggart in the army and at work in the 1960s. He describes his academic career at Hull, Leicester and Birmingham universities, including the publication of The Uses of Literacy and his active public life during the 1960s. He explains at length why he concentrated on public rather than strictly academic activities during the 1960s. Shots of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, from where Hoggart describes his years as Assistant Director General. Film of a UNESCO conference and of the Director General with whom Hoggart worked.
