| Footage description: | After a brief introduction from Ludovic Kennedy, Dr. David Hargreaves of Oxford University appears as the first witness against the proposition. A.H.Halsey, who is leading the case against the proposition questions Hargreaves about the effect of progressive educational ideas on primary schools. Hargreaves describes evidence for improving standards at 'O' and 'A' level since comprehensivation. Kenneth Minogue, leader of the case for the proposition, then discusses the relevance of educational research with Hargreaves. Dr. Hargreaves Halsey's second witness is Dr.Anthony Heath, a sociologist at Oxford University. They discuss the effect the expansion of education has had on standards. Heath compares British experience with that of other countries. Minogue then questions Heath about the social effects of educational changes and about standards of spelling. Halsey's final supporting witness is Stuart Maclure editor of The Times Educational Supplement Maclure expresses his views on how standards in education have risen. To Minogue he gives his opinion of what is wrong with British education,viz. lack of adequate finance, not poor standards. Kennedy introduces the final part of the debate. Halsey sums up the case for his team, then Minogue does likewise for those supporting the proposition. Kennedy briefly concludes the debate. |
