Description
In the early eighties, the fact of falling rolls and need to cut costs made the closure or merging of schools a common enough occurrence in many Local Education Authorities. Berkshire was one. But ...closing schools is never popular - in particular when the schools are small rural primary schools. This programme - which is accompanied by a radio programme and closely models the content of Unit 5 of the "Control of Education in Britain" course, shows the main stages of the decisions made by the Berkshire - Education Authority in respect of three village schools proposed for closure. In television terms this programme is remarkable for being a reenactment of these events by the people concerned. In terms of content, the main conclusion of the viewer must be, as the academic consultant says, that the effect of an election in the middle of the decision-making process was the single most important factor in the three schools' eventual reprieve.
