Description
"When British Steel Corporation closed the Shotton steelmaking plant in 1980, thousands went on the dole with very little idea about their future." In fact, just over 8,000 were made redu...ndant and together with a number of other factory closures in the area, the result has been a level of unemployment which is the highest in Wales, standing in mid-1983 at over 17% of the adult population. What has been the response of educational authorities to this immense social dislocation? From the "counselling" offered to newly redundant steel workers to new initiatives in informal community education, a range of measures is discussed. Much of the effort so far has been envisaged as being shortterm emergency provision, but a high level of educational need seems to have been revealed. What will be the long term prospects for adult education in Clwyd?
