This programme, the first of a closely linked pair, looks at the choices facing pupils as they reach school-leaving age, the way they decide amongst the many options open to them as they move on fr...om school. It looks at those who leave school at 16. Some go on to industrial apprenticeships, but this group has grown smaller with the rise of unemployment in the Midlands. Many go on to full or part time further education and the film looks in detail at the work of Coventry Technical College. It also follows a student from the technical college as he goes on to work as a hairdresser: how useful has college training been to his work? Finally, a lot of youngsters are taken on by the Manpower Services Commission for up to a year's paid training. what is the role of the MSC in post school provision? We see MSC TOPSHOP in action, and talk to Programme Officer, John Temple.
