Description
Sheffield City Council, faced with declining school rolls and growing unemployment, tackled the issue of educational provision for the over 16's. Their answer was to scrap sixth forms in schools an...d set up 6 tertiary colleges throughout the city to offer vocational and non vocational courses on a full time and part time basis. Only part of this plan was ratified by the Secretary of State for Education. The remainder wa put into place against a background of severe financial restraint. One term into the new system the programme looks at the colleges and the issues they face - and at the schools which retained their sixth forms - thise in Sheffield's only conservative constituency.
