Footage description: | An animated diagram shows the graph of a function being transformed into a graph of another function by translation and scaling. Allan Solomon introduces the programme. Mike Cranpin demonstrates the above transformation by going through the process one step at time. He manipulates shapes on a drawing board as he talks. An animated diagram is also used to illustrate his points. With the aid of an animation Allan Solomon and Mike Crampin consider the effects of the above transformations on function values in general. Mike Crampin works through a problem for students before setting them some problems to work at home. He shows why the graph of xl-x² is symmetric about the y axis. Crampin then goes on to set students several problems in which they are asked to explain the effects of certain transformations. Film shots of cars filling up at a petrol station introduce a discussion which relates the graph of a function to the graph of its inverse function. Commentary by Allan Solomon. Roger Duke looks at the concept of inverse functions graphically. He uses the petrol pump sequence above as an example. Animated diagrams are shown and curves are manipulated on a drawing board by Duke as he talks. |
