Footage description: Every quadratic curve is the same. Start from y=x2, and with a scaling and a translation, the curve of every other quadratic can be obtained. Is the same true of cubics? Mike Crampin and Allan Soloman take us on a computer exploration of cubic curves, scaling and translating them to see the possibilities. The final conclusion is that there are three basic cubic curves. We are also left with hints that the different features of cubics, namely the number of horizontal tangents will be of use in the following Block of the course. This programme makes extensive use of computer animation. Although references are made to both work earlier and later in the course, the programme may be viewed independently by anyone familiar with elementary graph sketching techniques. The associated unit audio tape provides a lead into the programme.
