Footage description: | Barbara Palmer, recently widowed, describes how her husband was taken ill and died from a heart attack. Mrs Margaret Martyr, vice-chairman of the Watford branch of 'Cruse', an organisation set up to help widows, talks about the pain and intense feeling of loss suffered by widows. Barbara Palmer describes how she dealt with the funeral arrangements for her husband. Mrs Martyr explains why widows have problems readjusting to everyday life when their spouse dies. The Cruse organisation aims to help widows through this difficult period. Barbara Palmer describes how she built up enough self-confidence to go and live back in her own home. She describes the difficulty she had sleeping and the feeling she has that her husband is in some way still present in her home. This is why she has not moved house. Mrs Martyr describes how some widows feel excluded from the company of their former friends. Barbara Palmer explains how her social life has altered and argues that this is because people are afraid of being embarrassed by newly bereaved people. Mrs Martyr next describes how people hear of 'Cruse'. Barbara Palmer explains how she came to get involved in the organisation. Both then talk about the advantages of group counselling and the value of discovering that other people have shared similar problems and experiences. Barbara Palmer explains that she now feels that she is in a position to help other newly bereaved women. Finally she talks about her voluntary work for Dr Barnados and of how her grand child has helped her to overcome her grief. |
