Footage description: Dr Jim Leeming introduces the programme with a discussion of the importance of rehabilitation especially for old people, and of the need for specialised staff to carry out this work with people recovering, for example from strokes and colostomies. He then describes the nature of a colostomy operation and the special problems it presents for patients and relatives. Stoma nurses are specially trained to deal with these problems. Christine Beadle, a stoma nurse is seen talking to a patient in hospital and advising him about the different types of stoma bag that are available. Jim Leeming talks about the work of the stoma nurse. Chris Beadle is shown helping and advising a colostomy patient, Alice Leigh. Jim Leeming talks to Chris about her objectives in her work and the type of problems she has to help with. Particular difficulties occur with older people as they often have more than one disability. Jim Leeming talks to Eddie Burns, a stoma patient, about how Christine Beadle was able to help him after his operation. He then talks about difficulties he has because of poor eyesight and a crippled hand. Jim Leeming now talks to Alice Leigh, another stoma patient helped by Christine Beadle. She also has other disabilities, caused by rheumatoid arthritis. She talks about her fears prior to the operation, how Christine had helped her with advice and company. Jim Leeming points out that Alice's colostomy is no longer a great problem for her. She does however receive additional help from other sources. A health visitor, occupational therapist and district nurse all describe their contributions to Alice's welfare. Finally Christine Beadle explains that she tries to build up a long-term relationship with her clients. Alice Leigh describes some things that she still hopes to be able to do in the future.
