Footage description: Brief shots of housing estate, then of Bedford Road Lower School in Kempston. Children are seen arriving for their first day at school. In voice over Marian Diamond emphasises the importance of this event for five year olds. Teacher Olive Album is seen making a little girl welcome. Headmaster Tony Barrett is seen talking to parents about the significance of starting school. Playground scenes. Caption: "Settling In". Olive Album is observed introducing new children to the class. Parts of this seqeunce are re-run to show exactly how the teacher tries to make the new children feel at home. She gives her own explanatory comments in voice-over. Caption: "Getting Organised." We observe how Olive Album organises classroom activities. At intervals Marian Diamond comments on the techniqes used by the teacher. Two specific exercises are observed in which she encourages children to participate. Mrs Album is seen preparing the children for a PE lesson. Brief shots of them in the school's gymnaseum. The children are then seen dressing themselves after the lesson. The commentary emphasis the significance of such exercises. Shots of children tidying up under the teacher's supervision. Film of the class at milk-time and play-time. Shots of a child being taken home for lunch by his mother. The commentary briefly considers the importance of these breaks in the school day for young children. Film of the class engaged in a writing exercise and then being read a story. Caption: "Summer Term." Over film of the same class at play and at work two terms later Olive Album describes the skills the children will have acquired in their first year at school. She is observed preparing the children for their move to a different class. The class is seen practising for a concert, shots of parents at the school, over which Mrs Album stresses the importance of contact between parents and school.
