Footage description: The programme opens with shots of a boy playing with a small fire. Derek Brechin's commentary emphasises the caution with which the child treats the fire. Shots of a pre-school child playing under her mother's supervision. Over various shots of older children at play Brechin comments on fears parents may have about their children going out to play. Caption: "Who's Scared?" Shots of a boy fishing then of children boating. A boy is seen playing on parallel bars and a toddler on a climbing frame. Brechin in voiceover examines the risk children take in these activities and questions the interference of parents in them. Interview with two parents who express views emphasising the dangers of play apparatus in the park. Caption: "Who's Careful?" Film of children playing in an adventure playground, over which Brechin comments on what's happening. A very cautious little boy is interviewed about whether he would emulate the more adventurous older children. A group of children are interviewed on the subject of safety in the adventure play ground. Playleader Dave Swingle gives his views on safety in the adventure playground. Caption: "Who's Bored?" Children are seen playing in a deserted shopping precinct. Brechin's commentary emphasises the toys and props the children use in their play. The bored nature of their play is indicated. Caption: "Who's Playing?" Children are seen at play in four different scenes, which are viewed twice. Two of the scenes show a child playing innocuously in water; one shows a group playing with a water sprinkler; one shows a child playing on his own rather than with his family. The commentary examines the kind of play activities seen in each episode. In interview Swingle explains how he handles complaints from adults about play activities. Brechin considers whether it is healthy for a child to play on his own rather than with others, over shots of a child playing in a park. Film of children playing on bikes and swings over which Brechin comments on the creative aspects of their play. Over a variety of play scenes he considers the individuality and importance of play.
