Footage description: The programme opens with shots of the McCulloch family at breakfast. Over family snapshots and household scenes Gerry Peacock describes the family circumstances. A friend of Marion McCulloch pays her a visit and chats to Mrs McCulloch senior. We see the old lady at the local village club for elderly people. Catherine Young, social worker, talks to Marion about plans for the family's holiday. Marion describes some of the difficulties the family has because of her mother-in-law. Because her husband is out of the house he is not so aware of the problems. Catherine offers to come and discuss the family's problems with them both. Shots of the family in the house. Mr and Mrs McCulloch discuss the future of Mrs McCulloch senior with Catherine Young. Jim McCulloch explains his feelings that he should care properly for his mother. Catherine describes some of the possible alternatives for looking after her that would take some of the pressure off the other members of the family. Gerry Peacock explains the importance of sympathetic counselling by the social worker. The McCullochs agree to go to look at a local residential home for the elderly. Catherine Young talks to Mrs McCulloch senior, about her feelings towards living in a residential home. She says that she is lonely and feels that she gets in the way. All the McCullochs visit the local home, Stewart House. They are shown all the facilities and the day centre where Mrs McCulloch joins in with a group doing exercises. The McCullochs describe their reactions to the home. They all express surprise at the quality of the facilities. They decide to put Mrs McCulloch's name forward for a place when one becomes vacant.
