Footage description: This is the second of two programmes looking at the proceedings in a juvenile court. The programme opens as Mr Burton, council for Charles, the subject of the care order under discussion, states that he does not wish to call any witnesses. Mr Coller, council for the parents, questions Mr Knight, Charles' father, about Charles' behaviour. Mr Knight blames his school for encouraging Charles in sloppy habits. He explains why he initially took Charles to the social services department. He states that he can provide Charles with a better life than the local authority. Mr Navarro, council for the local authority, cross-examines Mr Knight, challenging his view about Charles' school and his attitudes to his sons' behaviour. Mr Burton then cross-examines Mr Knight attempts to get him to admit to responsibility for Charles' bad behaviour. Coller then re-examines Mr Knight about his attitude to Charles' school. Mr Allonby, one of the magistrates, then asks him to clarify points he made about adapting his regimentation of Charles. Council for the family then sums up his case, as does Mr Burton for Charles. The court retires and returns to declare that it has found the case put by Hornsborough County Council proved. The court then considers which type of order it should make under the Acts open to it. They take reports from Miss Hannaford and question her as to where Charles would be sent if a care order were enacted that day. Council for the family seeks reassurance that they will have regular contact with Charles. The court then prepares to retire once more to consider what action to take. Before this occurs Mr Coller and Mr Burton make submissions to the court, the former asking that a full care order should not be imposed, the latter requesting that it should. Upon returning from discussion the court makes a care order placing Charles in the care of Hornsborough County Council.
