Footage description: | The programme begins with Betty Silk talking about her experience of the Women's Refuge. Linda Ricketts, manager of the refuge, talks about her own background as a battered wife and her decision to start the refuge. Over shots of residents doing housework. Linda describes the philosophy of the refuge. Betty Silk explains how she had to adapt to community life. Hezel Webb, secretary for the refuge, helps one of the residents, Sandra, to sort out a social security claim. Linda describes the emotional state of most of the women who come to the refuge. Christine Pree, resident, talks to Linda about her wish for a better education and career. Esme Washington, former resident, explains why she comes back to help out in the refuge. Linda talks about the refuge's dependency on local voluntary workers and other social work agencies. She talks with David Nichols, Liasion social worker, about a new resident. David describes the social services attitude towards the refuge and the way the workers in the refuge have developed. Over shots of Sandra and her child talking to the nursery leader, Linda describes the work of the nursery and its importance in providing stability for the children in the refuge. Esme Washington talks about her children and how they felt about her leaving her husband. Deborah, her daughter, talks about seperation from the childs point of view. Hazel Webb helps Sandra to mend a hairdryer. She explains that, small things like this help distressed people to rebuild their confidence. Linda describes the reasons why the refuge does not allow any men, other than voluntary workers on the premises. She also explains that no woman is ever turned away from the refuge, whatever her circumstances. She talks to Sandra about her departure from the refuge and some of the problems she may face on her own. |
