Description
The programme is linked to a course unit on British cinema of the 1930s by the presenter, Tony Aldgate. Its twin looks at the regional comedies of Formby and Fields, but this programme concentrates... on a single "prestige" film of 1938: "South Riding", produced by Alexander Korda and directed by Victor Saville, based on the novel by Winifred Holtby. The film was greeted in its day as a scrupulous and authentic picture of English life, and the programme offers students several key scenes and asks them to analyse the kind of reality constructed by the film, particularly in its attempt to link public lives and private drama. The resolution to social problems is brought about by a romantic alliance of characters representing social classes in a new consensus.
