Description
The programme is linked to Unit 7 "British Cinema in the 1930s", which contains stills and further commentary on the three films discussed: "Sally in Our Alley" (1931) and "...;Sing as We Go", both starring Gracie Fields and "Off the Dole", an early George Formby vehicle. (There are also script extracts in the broadcast notes.) Clips from the three films are used to examine the question of how social class was depicted in the very popular regionally-made comedies of the decade.
