Description
The first of a pair of programmes about television coverage of the 100th F.A. Cup Final, "Constructing the Spectacle" analyses the 31/2 hours of build-up on BBC and ITV channels. The pre...-match features constructed the event in four ways: as a sport spectacular, as a piece of family entertainment, as the culmination of an official "history" of football and as embodying national traditions - like the singing of "Abide with Me". The programme uses clips ranging from Cup Final editions of "Jim'll Fix It" and sports quizzes, to features like "Meet the Teams" and "The Road to Wembley", plus interviews with the editor of "Grandstand", football sociologist Chas Critcher (who believes that the media have "stolen" the game from supporters) and BBC commentator John Motson.
