The programme examines the development of television crime series in Britain from "Dixon of Dock Green" to "The Chinese Detective", using illustrative excerpts from those series... and from "Z Cars", "The Sweeney", "Out", "Law and Order", "Juliet Bravo" and "Wolcott" in addition to filmed interviews with writers and producers in the crime genre: Ian Kennedy Martin, Barry Hanson, Ted Childs and Trevor Preston. The programme looks at the representation of the police and of criminals, the uses of naturalism, the influences of production techniques on crime writers and producers, and the reflection of social change in their products.
