Textile and clothing-manufacture is now largely in the hands of multi-national companies who have the power to locate work to the areas of the world most favourable to the interests of the company.... Often the companies make use of cheap female labour and oblige the women to work for long hours in countries where labour legislation offers little protection. In this programme we look at the response to this situation of organised labour on an international basis. How effective have unions in the First World been in preventing this type of exploitation, and specifically, how is the problem of women workers in the Third World being tackled? Includes extracts from Thames TV's 'A Small World';
