The aim of the series "The Plough and the Hoe" is to build up a picture of the impact of agricultural development on village life in Northern India. The fifth programme looks at West Beng...al where the Marxist State Government is attempting to implement a policy of agricultural modernisation combined with increased social justice. We investigate some of the ideas behind this policy and some of the measures taken, in a State where traditional practices such as share-cropping are still very common.
