In this film, three women who were selected because of their activity in "public life", talk about their upbringing education and early career and whether their experiences have been affe...cted by the fact of being women. In the intercut interviews, the three women, Dorothy Kuya, Race & Ethnic Relations Adviser for a North London Borough Council; Sheila Hancock, actress and Associate Director of the Cambridge Theatre Company, and Inez McCormack, a N.U.PE. official in Belfast, trace various influences on them throughout their lives and discuss the pressures on them to conform to stereotypical expectations. Dorothy Kuya talks about her early family life and expectations in Liverpool and the prejudices that affected her career prospects. She discusses her decision to remain single in order to commit herself fully to her work and outside interests. Sheila Hancock reminisces about her early years in the theatre, discusses the difficulties she has faced as a female director, and talks about the pressures of family commitments. Inez McCormack, the "tough trade unionist" explains how she moved from being an unpolitical latecomer to university, after work in publishing and social services through to her present clear political committed outlook and trade union commitments.
