Description
This programme looks at the issue of Nuclear Proliferation in the context of a case study based on Brazil. Brazil has developed a nuclear power programme using imported technology from West German...y and the United States. The programme shows how supporters of nuclear energy in Brazil stress the need for independence in nuclear technology and the growing demand for energy, whilst critics reject the need for the generation of nuclear energy and point to the military risks that a nuclear programme might entail. Whilst this civil nuclear programme is safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the programme shows how a parallel an independent nuclear research programme is taking place in Brazil, with alleged links to the military. It is suggested in the programme that Brazil's interest in securing its position of power in South America, and rivalry with Argentina is the force behind this programme, which may soon bring the country to the brink of developing a nuclear weapons capability.
