Description
The programme looks at how different genres combine different ideological conventions and formal characteristics within realist narratives. Audiences have specific expectations about the convention...s which govern a crime series, as opposed to a situation comedy (which are examined in later programmes of the Course). This programme takes the genres of science-fiction and historical romance as its examples, comparing them across a number of analytic categories: title sequences, visual and musical signifiers, typical storylines, specific ideological themes, depiction of the hero/heroine's sexuality and patterns of viewer identification with main characters. Clips come principally from episodes of "Poldark" and "Blake's 7" with synopses and study questions provided in the broadcast notes.
