Description
Section 1: A series of short sequences that are designed to challenge people's perceptions and preconceptions of and reactions to mental handicap. -- Section 2: Two case studies of current research.... 'Oral History' looks at how the history of a long stay hospital, which is due to close, is being explored through the eyes of the residents. It shows interviews with residents recalling their experiences of hospital practice through the years. 'People's choices' shows how one researcher tries to discover what people with learning difficulties want, in relation to their housing situations. He uses photographs and pictures to help people with communication difficulties express their views. -- Section 3: Three case studies showing personal experiences. 'Communications' shows a woman with no speech at work in a voluntary centre and at a playgroup, with comments from her speech therapist and work colleagues. 'networks' shows a class where young people with learning difficulties explore their past and present lives by drawing personal shields and writing or taping life stories. 'Transitions' shows an adult education art class where people with learning difficulties express themselves through painting and also taping life-stories.
