Description
A description of how the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is keeping the mountain gorillas safe from the locals. The question of how the locals could be allowed to access limited resourc...es in the park yet allow the gorillas to thrive is discussed. Revenue from tourism also helps improve the local economy, but also the effect tourism has on the local community. The health of the habituated gorillas is monitored as they are susceptible to human diseases. Training of the guards to keep the tourists and gorillas separate for health reasons is discussed. Urban development due to tourism is discussed, the building of local schools, local health centre and local shops. The effect upon the local economy from tourism is compared with an area that doesn't have gorilla tourism. Alternative tourism is available, such as butterflies. The locals protect the environment as it benefits them economically. Habituation is the process of making wild animals tolerate humans in their area, not taming them. Byamukama explains how this process works and how it can risk the gorillas health. It can also increase the interaction between humans and gorillas, not always to everyone's benefit. Other countries have larger numbers of habituated groups, the reasons for keeping the number of habituated Bwindi gorillas low is discussed. Also, how other areas can benefit from the trickle down effect even if they don't have habituated groups of gorillas.
