Description
Its often necessary in science and mathematics to allow symbols to take the place of numbers, and so to produce formulae or equations. Allan Solomon and Mike Pentz use a journey on a train and plan...ning a car journey to show how some formulae or equations arise and how they can be manipulated to tell you numerical answers. The first equation comes from the 'Think of Number' game. Then Mike and Allan establish and explore the equation d=60t to connect distance and time at the constant speed of 60mph. Then measuring the time it takes to go through a tunnel, its length can be calculated. The speed of the train can be computed by measuring the time taken to travel a mile, and then using the equation d = st, after transforming it to s = d/t. Finally to plan a car journey involving both motorway and town driving Mike shows that the equation becomes D = st + d. With suitable substitutions and changing the subject to s the speed or time of the motorway part of the journey can be calculated.
