Description
The theory of evolution by natural selection and its application to human ancestry was new and disturbing when Neanderthal remains wewre discovered in 1864. Recognised as an extinct subspecies of H...omo sapiens no sign of earlier human species were known. Since then, of course, the reconstruction of human prehistory has taken great strides. This programme illustrates the kinds of human who came before and the conditions under which our ancestors lived and how their bones were preserved for us to find. The programme also considers other approaches to reconstructing our past. Comparisons between extant primitive peoples, early hominids and living primates allow us to build a more complete picture. The programme represents a concise account of what, at present, we know of human prehistory.
