Footage description: Shots of a large glacier. Commentary by Donald Holms reviews the events of the last glaciation in Europe. An animated map of Britain shows the retreat of the ice. Film of highland valleys formed by glaciers. Shots of Loch Lomond and the surrounding area. Commentary explains that the direction of glaciation can be determinded from the terrain and from glacial deposits, Jim Rose, at a riverside till, points out how direction of ice flow can be determined from the sediments there. Jim Rose next looks at a till which shows clear layers of sedimentation. He explains what this sedimentation indicates about the glaciation, particularly the time scale of the glacial retreat. He also explains how an absolute date can be determined for the event. Shots of the Clyde valley. Commentary explains what the fall and rise of sea level tells about the extent of the glaciation here. Jim Rose looks at a till in the valley and explains what the sedimentation there tells about the ice movement. He then looks at riverside sedimentation a few kilometres away and discusses its significance, particularly the evidence for re-advance of the ice after a warm interlude at about 11,000 years ago. The extent of the ice re-advance after the above interglacial in the Loch Lomond area is shown with the aid of a map. Shots of glacial features in the landscape which show direction of ice movement during the re advance. With the aid of animated diagrams showing the area's topography, the retreat and re-advance of the glaciation is shown. Commentary explains the sequence of events. Shots of the landscape of the area at intervals during the commentary.
