Description
This programme, co-produced with the ESC Geothermal Energy Division, provides a broadly based review of the sources and utilisation of geothermal energy in Europe. After a short introduction to the... concepts of heat transport and the manner in which heat flow is distributed over the Globe, it uses three locations to illustrate contrasting aspects of the geothermal story: 1. Larderello. In this volcanically active region of Italy high enthalpy steam from underground reservoirs is used to generate electricity. 2. Paris. The region around Paris is underlain by a deep sedimentary basin. Aquifers within the basin provide low enthalpy hot water which is used to heat greenhouses and housing developments. 3. Cornwall. The Hot Dry Rock Project: Experimental work by the Camborne School of mines to create artificial heat exchange surfaces in the local granite, and evaluate their geothermal potential.
